The R100 from Lifecore Fitness is one the best commercial-grade rowing machines you can buy. It’s solidly built(user weight capacity up to 600 lbs), it’s comfortable and it’s quiet.
Whether you just started rowing 2 hours ago, or you’re a pro athlete wanting to take his training to the next level, this machine will have you sweating your ass off in no time.
Because the Lifecore R100 rower features a resistance system which combines air resistance and magnetic resistance, the rowing motion is extremely smooth and controlled.

Build and Design
From the moment you get on the machine you can easily tell that it’s built to last. If feels very sturdy, thanks to the extruded aluminum frame and solid steel support.
The machine is very easy to assemble and it shoudn’t take you more than an hour to put it together.
The dual resistance system (air/magnetic), as I mentioned before allows for a smooth rowing motion, but it also makes the rowing machine whisper quiet. Although air resistance rowers are normally a bit loud, you don’t see this with the R100 machine thanks to the magnetic resistance system which kicks in when your workout gets more intense.
You get a very intense workout and still be able to hear the TV over the resistance unit. When you’re not using the machine you can easily fold it up. It takes up very little space.
The seat is pretty comfortable and glides smoothly on the industrial strength forged aluminum rail.
The Resistance Unit
The R100 is the only commercial-grade rowing machine that features a resistance system which combines air resistance with magnetic resistance.
When you start rowing the only resistance is from the air fan. As the workout gets more intense and the fan starts to become noisy the magnetic resistance comes into play. You still get the smooth rowing motion which comes with the air resistance but without all the noise.
You have 16 resistance level which you can adjust from the rower’s computer display.
The directionally adjustable air vent coming from the fan blows cool air on you while you’re working out.
Besides the fact that it’s so quiet, a magnetic resistance rower also has another big advantage: it’s practically maintenance free. All you really need to do is wipe it down.
The Monitor Display
The computer on the R100 rowing machines comes with an adjustable color LCD screen which gives you a lot of useful information about your curent and previous workout sessions. This is where you adjust the resistance levels and you can also choose from 15 preset workout programs.
The information on the monitor is very easy to read and it’s all there simultaneosly. Here’s what you can see:
- Strokes per minute
- Pulse rate
- Time per 500m
- Total time
- Total number of strokes
- Meters rowed
- Calories burned
The R100 rower comes with a heart rate monitor and a wireless chest strap. When you select a heart rate control program(HRM) the computer automatically adjusts the resistance based on your pulse.
Here’s a more detailed view on what each workout program consists of:
A quick start program where you choose a target distance and time for your workout. You can change the resistance level at any time during the workout.
White water and ramp programs
The programs simulate white water and ramps rowing condition, by slowly increasing the resistance levels as you go through the workout.
This program program gives you a sense of competition by allowing you to race againts a pace boat. You’ll see boat icons on the monitor which show you were you are relative to the pace boat. You select the speed of the virtual pace boat when you start the workout.
An interval training workout is a combination of high intensity workout sessions mixed with short recovery periods. With the R100 you can choose from either a distance based interval program or a time based program.
With the distance based version you set the target distance, the number of intervals and the interval recovery time which is between 10 seconds and 10 minutes.
With the time based program, everything is the same except instead of setting a target distance, you set the duration of the workout.
Watts control program
You select a target watts output and the computer automatically adjusts the resistance so that the target watts levels are maintained throughout the rowing session.
Heart rate control programs
The heart rate programs are based on your individual user profile(you can save 4 different profiles) which contains information about your age, weight, etc.
Once you set the target distance, time, you can choose from 3 different programs. The computer adjusts the resistance levels so that your heart rate is maintained at 60%, 75% or 85% of it’s maximum, depending on which program you choose.
The heart rate control program is the same as the watts control program, only instead of maintaining target watts levels, it maintains a target heart rate based on the data the heart rate monitor receives from your chest strap.
